Wang Zhigang (b. 1960) asks, "What endures?" with new urgency in recent work. Two bottles sit in front of X-rays of lungs. One X-ray is clear and one is occluded, one bottle is transparent and one is solid red. He thinks about emptiness as pivotal to life--dynamic and changing, not abstract. Emptiness is the space we need to breathe. Since 2010, Wang has painted more than three thousand Buddha heads to explore the ideas of emptiness and fullness. He laughs when he says the Buddha is China's biggest celebrity, then says, "But seriously."
